Mandals to get police award for best security

The Mumbai police have set up a committee to reward Ganpati mandals for complying with the security norms of the police. From the list of 26 mandals (two from each zone) top three will be rewarded and will be given certificates from the police department. The move is mainly to appreciate citizen participation in security.

According to sources, the Mumbai police have decided to start an initiative this year, known as Best Ganpati Mandal reward. Those mandals that will be following best and highest security standards will be felicitated. As per this initiative, each deputy commissioner of police will nominate names of two mandals which, as per them, have met the highest form of security measures this Ganpati season.

Since there are 13 zones, total 26 nominations will be received. A three member committee comprising additional commissioner of police, protection and security, Madhukar Pandey, deputy commissioners of police security and special branch will then select top three nominees, the sources added.

“Some of the parameters that will be considered while making nominations and selecting the best mandals will be – has the mandal authorities attended all the preparatory meetings conducted by the police, do they have required equipment like door frame and hand-held metal detectors, CCTV cameras, private security, volunteers, women security and volunteers, whether they had ensured separate queues for women and whether police instructions with regard to the vehicular traffic has been followed,” said a police officer associated with this initiative.

“Certificates and cash rewards will be given to the top three mandals. The move is taken to ensure participation from mandals in maintaining a great model of security. While the police will do its job of providing overall security, citizens will ensure their due contribution for the same,” said Madhukar Pandey.
