An 18-year-old woman, in the ninth month of pregnancy, was strangled to death by her father in Nashik, on Friday, apparently because she got married to a man of a different caste.

The police said, Eknath Kumbharkar picked up his daughter Pramila Kamble from her house at Kamgar Nagar in the Satpur area, early in the morning, saying her grandmother was seriously ill and wished to see her.

Eknath, who lives at Hanumanwadi, in the Panchvati area, had gone to his daughter’s house in an autorickshaw, which he hired from his neighbour, Pramod Aher. As they drove along, he asked Aher to stop the vehicle near a hospital in Joshiwada, off the Gangapur Road, and sent him to inquire about a patient.

Eknath, 38, then strangled his daughter using a rope that he had carried along.
When Aher came out of the hospital, he saw what was happening and tried to stop Eknath, but it was probably too late.

Aher sought the help of passers-by and took Pramila to the civil hospital. She was declared dead before admission. Aher informed the police and Eknath was arrested immediately afterwards.

The police said Eknath worked as a plumber on daily wages, but was apparently without work for most of the past three months. About a year ago, he had registered a complaint with the police that his daughter was missing.

When Pramila was found, she returned to her parents. But shortly afterwards, she left home and moved to the house of her husband Deepak Kamble. Kamble is a mason.
