She had approached the police for help on Saturday night when he came home under the influence of alcohol and started abusing her.

The police arrested Suryavanshi on charges of murder and will be produced in court on Monday.

According to the police, Suryavanshi, who is a resident of Jeevanjyot society in Charkop sector 5, Kandivli (West), has been unemployed for some time. His wife Preeti, 39, worked as a manager with a private firm in Churchgate. The couple’s two children — Push, 14, and Yesh, 12 — had left home at 5.30am to attend NCC training in the navy wing at Churchgate and were not at home at the time of the incident.

“On Saturday night, the couple had a heated argument because Preeti had not cooked good food for him. Suryavanshi was under the influence of alcohol and started abusing and beating her. After that, Preeti approached the Charkop police station for help. She complained that her husband had been harassing her,” said police inspector Praveen Patil of the Charkop police station.

“We registered a non-cognisable offence against Suryavanshi and he was kept in the police station till 6.30am. He was later allowed to go following a warning that he would not harass his wife again,” said Patil.

“Suryavanshi, who is a very short-tempered man, reached home and started fighting with his wife,” said Patil. He started packing his bags to leave Mumbai. Preeti told him that she would either go along with him or commit suicide. Suryavanshi then said to her that he would kill her himself.

“A furious Suryavanshi slit Preeti’s throat and stabbed her in the abdomen and chest with a kitchen knife,” said Patil. “After the crime was committed, Suryavanshi came to the police station and surrendered. The police rushed to the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem to Bhagwati hospital,” said a police official.
