The Dindoshi sessions court on Friday sentenced a 52-year-old auto driver, Babasaheb Kamble, to death for raping and murdering a 7-year-old girl in Goregaon (W) in October 2011. The court, while awarding the sentence, said the case fell in the rarest of rare category, hence demanding capital punishment.

Judge US Joshi Phalke said, “The accused shows no remorse...He has committed the act in the most gruesome manner and it shocks the conscience of society.”

According to the investigating officer Raju Kasbe, the crucial medical and circumstantial evidence produced by his team led the court to award capital punishment. “After the incident, the girl’s clothes, blood, towel and footwear were strewn in the house of the accused, which proved crucial in the case. The blood samples were tested and verified to prove the case,” added Kasbe. Kasbe and his team had also rounded up over 20 people from the neighbourhood who had seen the man hold the girl’s hand and take her to his house.

It is learnt that Kamble was booked in a murder case in 2000. He also has cases of burglary and theft registered against him. “The fact that he was a habitual offender also went against him.. He was also a miscreant in the neighbourhood, hated by women.
Besides, the victim’s family was cooperative. All these factors helped us secure his conviction,” added Kasbe.
