According to the police, Jadhav, a labourer and a resident of Sanjay Nagar slums in Govandi, was handed over to them by Naeem, a milk vendor, at 7.30am. Naeem told the police that he spotted Jadhav eying his bicycle in a suspicious manner and when he questioned him, both had an altercation. Naeem then decided to get Jadhav to the police station.

"Naeem brought Jadhav to us at around 7.30am. A police sub-inspector (PSI) questioned him and let him off at around 8am," said a police officer, adding: "At around 9.45am, another PSI went to Room No. 205 on the second floor of the police station where he found Jadhav hanging from the ceiling using a pant of a policeman. Senior officers of the police station were informed. The crime branch has been asked to probe the cause of his death."
