A man died after a fire broke out at a Girgaum building around 6 pm on Sunday. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after two and a half hours. The cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained.

Firefighters pressed eight fire engines and six water tankers at the scene of the fire at Kothari House. Initially, it was confined to the second and third floor of the four-storey structure situated close to Central Plaza cinema along Raja Ram Mohan Rai Marg, but later the intensity increased and it was declared Level III.

“The wooden flooring on the third floor and stairway collapsed due to the fire,” said an official from the Mumbai Fire Brigade.

Officials said a man, believed in aged between 35 and 40 years, was found unconscious on the third floor of Kothari House. He was taken to Saifee hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Cooling operation was underway at the time of going to print which meant officials were unable to ascertain the extent of damages immediately.
