Man killed after complaining of eve teasing, Virar police books victim

In a fatal turn of events, an upright citizen who complained to the Virar police about female students being eve-teased by goons became a victim, leading to his death, as the police failed to take prompt and timely action. Instead, cops booked the deceased when he kept complaining, alleged acting under political pressure.

What happened Monday night?
A resident of Virar east, 36-year-old Shashi Jha was the brother of Bhaskar, 26, a teacher running a coaching center in Virar. When some goons started harassing and eve-teasing female students of the coaching centre, Shashi complained to the Virar police.
On Monday night, when Shashi was outside the centre, five men confronted him, and in a brutal attack, killed Shashi.

Did the cops act on the complaints?
Repeated complaints fell on deaf ears. "A week back, we had complained to the Virar police but they did not take any action nor did they initiate steps to curb such incidents. The second time I went again to the police but still they did not take down my complaint and now it has led to the killing of my brother," said Bhaskar.

Why was the deceased booked?
According to the family members, complaints went unheeded and the cops booked the complainant instead of the goons out of political pressure. "My brother was booked by the police as they came under pressure by political leaders and local builders. We also suspect that they have done this for monetary benefits," said Bhaskar.

What are the cops doing now?
The alleged inaction by the senior officers is now being probed by Palghar police officials. "We have arrested two persons for murder and rioting under sections of Indian Penal Code. The family members were angry and they did bring the dead body to the police station in protest but we have assured them that during the probe if we find him not guilty we will remove his name from the case and will arrest the other three accused within 48 hours," said Shrikrishna Kokate, additional superintendent of Palghar police.

"A high level inquiry has been set up in the case and if we find any officials guilty we will take strong action against him," said Kokate.
