Man in Mumbai to help ‘poor’ maid who stole from him

Swati Mehta, 28, a maid servant, was recently arrested by the Marine Drive police for allegedly stealing ornaments worth Rs65,000 from her employer’s residence. But the complainant is now planning to bail her out as she is poor.

According to the Marine Drive police, Mehta had worked with the complainant (name withheld) for eight years. “She was very close to the family. A few months ago, she got married and quit the job,” said a police officer.

The complainant hired a new maid, who went on a 15-day leave last month. “He asked Mehta to work for a fortnight. However, a few days later the family found a few earrings and rings missing. They registered a police complaint on June 13.”

They first suspected the new maid, but investigations revealed that the ornaments were stolen by Mehta. During interrogations, she confessed to the crime. She was arrested on June 19.

“Since Mehta was close to the family, the victim wants to hire a lawyer to bail her out. Mehta is in judicial custody till July 6,” the officer said.
