Officers of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) busted an international fake currency racket with the arrest of a man from West Bengal and seized fake currency worth over Rs 5 lakh. The kingpin of the racket is a widow from Jharkhand, who has links with Bangladesh nationals, police said.

The arrested person has been identified as Harun Dayamalik Shaikh, 51, a native of Purulia district. According to senior police inspector Mahesh Desai of Juhu unit of ATS, specific information was received about a man arriving near Star Bazaar in Andheri (East). Accordingly, a trap was laid on Monday.

“Shaikh was caught and fake notes worth Rs 5,04,500,” said Desai. He added that, Shaikh was produced before a local court on Tuesday and was remanded to police custody till April 11.

The police claimed that, Shaikh, at the behest of the kingpin identified as Saira Bibi Ansari, pumped in counterfeit notes in the Indian market.
