The MRA Marg police have arrested a 28-year-old 10th standard pass student who seems to be quite the expert in changing the IMEI number of mobile phones.

The arrested person has been identified as Nadeem Naim Shaikh, a resident of Jogeshwari.

According to senior police inspector Ashok Jagdale of MRA Marg police, specific information was received that IMEI numbers of mobile phones were being changed on the first floor of shop number 13 in Manish Market. The police decided to send a dummy customer in order to authenticate the information.

Police sub-inspector Baba Rathod gave the low-down of the operation, saying: "We gave a dummy customer a mobile phone and checked its IMEI number in advance, through the *#06# code. On our instruction, the customer went to the shop on April 16 and told repairer Shaikh that he wanted to get his mobile number's IMEI changed. Shaikh said that it would cost Rs400, and told the customer to return after 15 minutes."

The 'customer' immediately alerted the police, who then raided the shop. "When we checked the IMEI number of the mobile phone given by our dummy customer to Shaikh, it was changed. The accused used flashing software to change the number. We have seized Shaikh's computer, hard disk and mobile phone for investigation. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act, for cheating and forgery," said Rathod.

Another police officer said: "It is an important detection, because mostly, stolen phones are used for changing IMEI numbers. Once the IMEI number is changed, then it can be used for criminal activities."
