A criminal on record, Vaibhav alias Pappu Bajirao Waje of Tathawade, was on Monday remanded in police custody for two days by the court of the judicial magistrate (first class), Umeshchandra More, for allegedly looting and attacking a female college student on the night of October 5.

The incident took place on the Westerly bypass (Katraj-Dehu Road bypass) opposite the Indira Institute of Management, Pune (IIMP) in Wakad, when Sneha Taunk,21, who is studying for a post-graduate diploma in business management, was brutally attacked.

Sneha, who was walking alone along the road to reach a photocopy shop, was attacked by an unidentified man. He hit her on the face with an iron rod and fled with her debit card, cash, cellphone and gold ornaments, valued at Rs19,800.

Sneha suffered facila fractures, deep cuts on her eyes and face, resulting in 12 stitches, and required intensive cosmetic surgery at the Aditya Birla Hospital. She is a resident of Sai Hostel near IIMP.

Arguing for seven days’ police custody, assistant public prosecutor AK Pacharne told the court that the looted articles are yet to be recovered from the suspect.
