A day after his arrest after on charges of poaching, Sushant Bhawar (29) confessed to shooting birds. A Thane court has also granted the forest department his custody till January 17 for further investigations.

DNA on Tuesday had reported how Thane Crime Branch on Saturday had arrested Bhawar, a resident of Vanichapada, Yeoor at Thane, for stealing a camera trap to record small wild cats movement.

Incidentally, the camera trap had captured his image wherein he was seen holding a big air gun over his shoulder inside the protected forest area at Yeoor. The accused has confessed to stealing the camera to cover his tracks.

Rajendra Pawar, Range Forest Officer (RFO), Yeoor Range, SGNP said that now that they have the custody of the accused they would first recover the gun. "We will visit the sites along with the accused to find the locations where he hunted birds. We will also try to find out the identity of the other two people who were caught on the camera trap along with him," he said, adding parallel investigations will also be carried out to find if they are linked with any other cases of poaching.

Sources in the forest department said that as of now it seems that Bhawar used to frequent areas inside as well as outside the protected forest on a regular basis and could have been poaching regularly. Ever since they found the image of Bhawar and others inside the protected area, they have intensified patrolling, claims a senior SGNP official.
