The cyber crime cell of the Mumbai crime branch has been closely monitoring the virtual world to ensure that no malicious comments were posted. “We had been trawling the cyberspace since Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s health started deteriorating. Our team kept a close watch on the web, especially social networking sites, to ensure that malicious comments were deleted,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime). They have deleted more than 12 malicious comments posted on the social networking sites.

“We traced the persons who posted the comments and told them delete the same. We did not want these posts to create chaos in the city,” added Roy.

When asked about the arrest of the two women for posting comments on the city being closed on account of Thackeray’s death, an officer said: “I do not know the contents of the post... We make an arrest only if a post is found to be malicious under the IT Act.”
