Major mishaps on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway

JANUARY 28, 2013: Five people died on the spot and two others sustained severe injuries near Baur village, 7km from Urse toll naka

JANUARY 3, 2013: VP Gopal, 58, a senior official of Atlas Copco, was killed near the Urse toll plaza after a front tyre of his car burst. The car swerved into the adjacent lane and crashed into another that was heading to Mumbai. Other occupants in the car were grievously injured

DECEMBER 23, 2012: Two Marathi TV actors, Anand Abhyankar and Akshay Pendse, along with Pendse’s 2-year-old son, died when their car was hit by a speeding goods carrier at the Urse toll plaza

OCTOBER 8, 2012: Three people were killed on the spot when a speeding tempo hit their car in Sadavli village

SEPTEMBER 20, 2012: A 58-year-old woman from Mumbai died, and seven other were injured after a multi-utility vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a divider near Devale village

JULY 29, 2012: Four people died while six others were injured in an accident near Baur village at Kamshet

Since January 1 to February 4 this year, the highway police have made a total of 22,334 cases against drivers indulging in offences from overspeeding and lane-cutting, to dangerous driving on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. 

The fines collected from these offenders stands at a whopping Rs24.54 lakh.

The expressway is used by 30,000 vehicles every day, and highway police surveys show that more than 70% of the drivers break speed limits.

Currently, the 94kilometre stretch of the expressway is policed by four teams called tabs, each with 3 officers, 30 constables and 3 drivers.
