Ruling partners Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena are currently engaged in noora kushti ahead of the declaration of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election schedule any time by the Election Commission of India. Even though both are reiterating that the alliance is a foregone conclusion in a bid to retain power and defeat Congress-NCP combine, they are also dropping sufficient hints of going solo. Amidst ongoing seat-sharing negotiations, BJP and Shiv Sena have adopted a more aggressive posture against each other on politically hot issues relating to the development of Metro carshed depot in Aarey Milk Colony and bringing back the Rs 3 lakh crore refinery project at Nanar in the coastal Ratnagiri district.

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya have openly opposed Metro car shed depot in Aarey Milk Colony. Thackeray senior went a step ahead and warned that Metro carshed depot project will meet the same fate as Nanar refinery project. Following strong opposition from Shiv Sena, the Rs 3 lakh crore project at Nanar in Ratnagiri district Ratnagiri district it was formally scrapped in March ahead of the Lok Sabha election.

Sena youth leader Aaditya Thackeray sounded an alarm that destruction of bio-diversity in Aarey Milk Colony would cause floods in Mithi river. However, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis threw his weight behind the need for axing trees to build it. He asked Aaditya to understand the real motives of some of the handful of protesters.

Fadnavis, who is currently on his Maha Janadesh Yatra, replied to Thackeray's jibe indicating that he would do a rethink to bring refinery project back to Nanar. Fadnavis did not stop there but further said that refinery should happen only in Nanar being a green project as it will create jobs to one lakh youth in the Konkan region.

In case of Metro carshed depot at Aarey Colony, its fate will be decided after the ongoing court battle

Reacting to slogan shouting by locals in support of refinery project during his Maha Janadesh Yatra on Tuesday, Fadnavis said although he was not making any official announcement he is ready to discuss to bring the refinery project back at Nanar.

Observers say it is posturing by BJP and Shiv Sena to increase their bargaining power to get maximum seats in the seat-sharing pact for the assembly election. BJP has already clarified that it was not in favour of 144:144 seat-sharing formula and sharing of Chief Minister's post for two and a half years each suggested by Shiv Sena. BJP is pressing for 150 plus seats leaving around 120 to Shiv Sena and 19 to other allies.

According to the observers, BJP and Shiv Sena know that any decision on Nanar refinery project won't be possible now but only after the new government is formed. Similarly, in the case of Metro carshed depot, its fate will be decided after the ongoing court battle.
