In good news for cancer patients and their relatives who visit Mumbai for treatment, the state health department has sought 300 flats in two buildings of Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in Mahul, and plans to convert the buildings into a sanitarium.

State health minister Dr Deepak Sawant on Monday informed the state assembly that his department has sent the proposal to the urban development department. He said that he was confident of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis taking a positive decision in the matter.

Dr Sawant was responding to a calling attention motion moved by MLAs Ulhas Patil, Nassem Khan, Amin Patel, Varsha Gaikwad, Mangalprabhat Lodha, Pratap Sarnaik, Abu Azmi, Amit Deshmukh, Yogesh Sagar and others. Dr Sawant informed the House that once the 300 flats were available to cancer patients and their relatives, his department would provide a provisional store and creche for children as well. He said that a doctor would also be made available at the place for post-chemotherapy needs.

MLAs Ulhas Patil, Bharati Lavhekar, Prabniti Shinde and Ajay Choudhary spoke on the motion. Choudhary, who represents Parel, pointed out that relatives of cancer patients often have no option but to stay on the footpaths outside Tata Memorial Hospital in his constituency. Lavhekar expressed the need for cheaper testing facilities for breast cancer and made demands for a mobile van to screen patients.

The health minister also informed the assembly about a free cancer detection center that has been opened at Malwani and chemotherapy would begin there in a month's time. He said that the health department would soon start free cancer detection tests in all government hospitals in a phased manner.
