The seventh pay commission, that was implemented with effect from January 1, 2016, is yet to be reflected in the paycheck for the teachers across the city. From civic school teachers to college/university teachers, everyone is still being paid on the criteria of the fifth and sixth pay commission.

"Director of higher education, Pune directed all the divisional heads to pay the August salary of the teachers as per the seventh pay commission. Yet, Konkan divisional head directed principals of nearly 15 colleges to submit salary slips as per the sixth pay commission," said the statement that was issued by the Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU).

Similarly, the professors working at the university level in the city on a clock-hour basis also termed as ad-hoc professors are still being paid on the basis of the fifth pay commission.

According to one of the professor DNA spoke to, the pay scale difference between the fifth and seventh is close to Rs 25,000. "We have written letters to all possible delegations in the education ministry - state and central level. My fellow professors working out of the state earn almost 75% more than what we are being paid," a professor from the University of Mumbai (MU) said.

Civic, unaided school and junior college teachers claim they are currently being paid half of what aided school teachers get

Similar is the situation with civic school, unaided school and junior college teachers. These teachers claim they are currently being paid half of what aided school teachers get. Dimple Khatau, a city-based teacher said, "We are expected to do work related to academics, students, elections, government, management, administration, but when we ask for our rights, we are complaining. Forget about security, we will be more than happy if we are paid like every teacher in an aided school gets. Is equality in pay scale too much to ask for?"

Meanwhile, soon the teachers in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) might get their paycheck as per the seventh pay commission.

Anjali Naik, chairperson of BMC education committee confirmed that the procedure is going on. "We have already passed the request to the senior authority. Most probably, from November, the salaries will be as per seventh pay commission," she said.
