With the stand-off between the Shiv Sena and BJP continuing over sharing of seats, diehard Shiv Sainiks have sought to remind the latter of the time when their party allowed it to expand base in Maharashtra. Sainiks say they are upset that the BJP is putting pressure on Sena for more seats.
“BJP should not forget the old days when they had no standing in the state and we supported them. Because of Sena’s help, BJP expanded its base in state. Now, they are resorting to muscle flexing. Marathi people will teach them lesson if they don’t make alliance with the Sena,” said a Shiv Sainik.
Senior BJP leaders have urged Sena to break the seat-sharing deadlock. They say to defeat the Congress-NCP alliance and form the next government in Maharashtra, the saffron forces must remain united.
“It is an open secret that BJP got a foothold in the state, thanks to Balasaheb. After the victory in Lok Sabha elections, they have become arrogant. They should realise that now there is no Modi wave in the state. Both parties should put up a united fight if they want to retain power,” said Bal Kalsekar, ex-vibhag pramukh (division chief) South Mumbai. Kalsekar is associated with party since its inception.
The Sena and BJP, which have a common Hindutva agenda, forged an alliance more than 25 years ago. Traditionally, Sena has always contested on more seats in assembly polls. However, this time, the BJP wants a bigger share of the seat pie, a move that Sena vehemently opposes.
Anil Haldive, city chief, Kankavli (Konkan Region) said, “BJP can’t just go by the Lok Sabha results. I am a small person to comment on the Sena-BJP alliance and the decision will be taken by our senior leaders. But I personally feel that the parties must stay together.”
Vijay Naik, ex-shakha pramukh, Grant Road, is equally enraged. He said, “BJP should not challenge the Sena in its own state. They should understand the ground reality. BJP needs to take a lesson from its poor show in the bypolls.”
Naik, who has worked for nearly 36 years for Sena added, “In Maharashtra, we are the big brother and BJP should respect that. I think Uddhav Saheb will take the right decision on the alliance.”
