In order to generate revenue from its non-functional speedboats, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has decided to lease out two of them to private operators for a period of two years. The speedboats, which were used for patrolling purpose, will have to be repaired by the operators before using them for commercial purpose.
According to the MMB, it has around ten speedboats, of which four are used by it for patrolling purpose, and the remaining six are not functional. Of these six, it plans to lease out two. The speedboats will have to be repaired by the company which rents them out, and the MMB will reserve the rights to carry out inspection of the same every three months.
"This will generate revenue, and the boats will be repaired for free considering the operator has to return the speedboats in functional condition. That's which is icing on the cake," said an MMB official.
It is to be noted that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had slammed MMB earlier this year for buying four new speedboats despite the fact that the six speed-boats owned by it were lying unused.
The MMB official added, "We do not know how much money will we get out of lease rent, but whoever quotes the highest and rationally, will get boats. A bid has also been floated for the same, and interested parties can quote accordingly."
Further, the speedboats boats that have a seating capacity of six each can only be used during the non-monsoon season, and cannot be operated when the sea is rough.
Meanwhile, in June this year, the MMB had utilised idle space at Badlapur jetty wherein it had rented out space to speedboat owners for parking.
