With Jet Airways heading for bankruptcy proceedings, the Maharashtra government said on Tuesday that it would raise the hardships faced by the carrier’s employees with the Union civil aviation ministry.

The government said it will set up a meeting of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, MLAs, representatives of unions and Jet staff before the end of the Monsoon Session of the state legislature on July 2 to discuss the matter. State Labour Minister Sanjay Kute told DNA, ‘’The government will sympathetically look into the issue.”

The country’s first private airline was grounded on April 17 over unpaid loans of over Rs 14,000 crore, leaving thousands of employees in the lurch.

All India Jet Airways Officers & Staff Association president and NCP legislator Kiran Pawaskar said, “The fate of 16,000 permanent staffers and 6,500 contractual employees hangs in the balance.” He said the union has been pursuing the matter with the Central Labour Commissioner for early relief. ‘’After meeting with the CM, the matter will be taken again with the CLC.”
