Maharashtra government will launch Utthan, a vocational training programme for those who have recovered from drug addiction. The project, supported by the United Nations and the Centre, would kick off from Pune district on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, on June 26.

The state minister for social justice and de-addiction activities, Shivajirao Moghe, said NGOs like Muktangan Rehabilitation Centre and Kripa Foundation would select about 200 beneficiaries for the scheme in Pune.

Interacting from Mumbai with reporters in the city via videoconferencing, he said, “The programme is aimed at various individuals who have recovered from drug addiction. The scheme would provide vocational training and assistance, which would help them find jobs or start business.”

Moghe said the aim of the project is to ensure that these youths go back to the mainstream of society and lead normal lives.
The scheme would later be expanded to other districts of the state.

“The programme might also cover individuals who suffer from AIDS, disabilities or are from weaker sections of society,” the minister said.
