Around 13,509 people were killed in road accidents in 2018 across the state, up from the 12,511 deaths in 36,056 mishaps in 2017, according to the data from the state transport department.

Now, in a bid to meet the deadline put by World Health Organisation — to reduce road accidental deaths by 50 per cent by 2020 — the Maharashtra government has created local level committees that will oversee accident sites and black spots on road.

Black spots are accident-prone locations along the roads with sharp curves, potholes, insufficient light, lack of fluorescent markings on the sides etc. At present, there are 1324 black spots across Maharashtra.

This Committee has been initiated from January 9 which will give constant updates on measures taken.

CP Joshi, Secretary (Roads), Maharashtra government said: "These committees will identify the black spots and fix them. The members will visit the accident site and do scientific analysis behind the causes of the accidents." He told this at a Road Safety workshop on Tuesday evening.

The PWD has already begun training staff for the same and will further extend it to other departments. "We are looking for Transport Engineers who will study every accident in a scientific way," said Shekhar Channe, Transport Commissioner.

A provision of Rs 2 crore has been made to tackle these black spots. Also, a road safety audit will be carried out where in these black spots will be visited after work is completed. Moreover, they will also improve the overall quality of 8200 km of the road at a cost of Rs 24000 crore by March 2020.
