In this regard, Waikar has also written to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. He said that when any military man dies, he is called a martyr. Thus, he added, a fire brigade officer should also be called a martyr.

"Both fiught to serve the country and are ready to sacrifice their life while performing duty. So, the same services and facilities should be extended to them," Waikar said after giving cheques to families of the deceased officers who fought Kalbadevi's Gokul Nivas fire recently. Three fire officers who died include SG Amin, SW Rane and MN Desai.

Waikar said that due to skyrocketing prices people are unable to buy houses. "I have asked the chief minister to allot houses from the CM's quota. It is the government's responsibility to take care of such family whose earning member has lost their life in service," Waikar said adding that the government should seriously think over these demands.

Recently, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had also demanded that the fire officers who died while performing their duties, should be declared martyrs.
