One year after Ayushman Bharat scheme was launched in the state, health activist in urban and rural areas states that not many citizens are aware about the scheme. There is a lack of awareness among the general public about its eligibility and approach towards the scheme.

The Ayushman Bharat Scheme was launched last year on September 23. According to the Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA), an NGO working related to public health sector will soon be starting a study on the scheme in Mumbai city.

Brinelle D'souza, a health activist, said, "Even in the urban context many people are not really aware about the scheme and they don't have any idea about the mechanism of the scheme. Where to go to avail the scheme and what is the eligibility. The scheme is for the urban poor, but In city like Mumbai, we have found that urban poor working in an informal sectors, are not aware about it. If the government does not create awareness among the targeted group, how can the eligible person be able to avail the scheme."

She further added, "Many people do not know how to access it. There is no idea at the ground level. While the scheme is not very old, the implementation of it at ground level is important."

While in a recent 20,000 household survey done by the non-profit organisation in Mumbai, they received a response stating 73 per cent of respondents on an average were not aware of any government scheme or health insurance. But it was just the 27 per cent who were aware of the government's health insurance schemes, some 46 per cent were aware of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana, while 78 per cent knew of Ayushman Bharat Scheme, and 45 per cent were aware of Rashtriya Shwastiya Bima Yojana.

Milind Mhaske, Director at Praja Foundation, said, "There has been some kind of awareness, but It is not reaching out to people significantly. As per the survey, around 1/4th of the population in the city is aware about it and has availed the benefits of the scheme."
