Fresh turmoil in Mumbai Congress just a day before the last day for filing nominations for the state's assembly polls. Former Mumbai Congress President, Sanjay Nirupam took to micro-blogging website Twitter to express his displeasure and unhappiness over the ticket distribution in the party.
Nirupam tweeted, "It seems the Congress Party doesn't want my services anymore. I had recommended just one name in Mumbai for Assembly election. Heard that even that has been rejected. As I had told the leadership earlier, in that case I will not participate in poll campaign. Its my final decision." (sic)
Annoyed at being ignored in the party, Nirupam said that he can no longer tolerate insults in the party. Nirupam expressed his displeasure saying, "The party removed me from the post of Mumbai Congress President to insult me. Now I'm so disrespected that they won't even give a ticket to my hardworking worker in my area even at my behest."
Nirupam is a known leader in Mumbai and has a presence amongst the North Indian voters in western suburbs. While the exact reason and the seat for which he had demanded ticket is not yet known, the rumour has it that the seat was for western suburbs. Nirupam had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North West seat, this was his second continuous defeat. Before this in 2014 elections he lost his seat of Mumbai North to BJP's Gopal Shetty, Nirupam represented the seat between 2009-2014 in the Parliament. The Congress party in Mumbai has been facing a lot of issues in the run up to the election. Before Nirupam's tweet, the 2019 Lok Sabha candidate of Congress from Mumbai North, Urmila Matondkar also had put in her papers.
Eknath Gaikwad, new Congress city chief said, "Every leader works for their victory. I haven't read the tweet by Sanjay Nirupam, but I am sure he will work with us together for the party."
