In the wake of the recent terror threats that put the city on high alert, the state and police issued a circular to all schools to tighten security measures.

“During a recent inspection of schools, we found that many schools are not taking security seriously. Many schools do not have watchmen. They do not screen visitors or issue identity cards,” said a senior official from the education department.

In the circular issued on December 15, the police have provided a list of security measures that the schools must implement by the time they reopen next year.

The city authorities ordered schools to check and register every visitor, prohibit unauthorised people from entering the campus, and prevent knives or flammable, explosive and toxic materials from being carried into schools.

Most of the schools have now started sensitising their staff and security guards regarding terrorist attacks and the need to remain vigilant and keep an eye on movements of suspicious persons and unclaimed baggage.

IES Manik Vidya Mandir recently held an evacuation drill to check their security measures. Training is also been given to the non-teaching staff.

The police have also asked schools to submit floor plans and walk-through 3D CD of the buildings. “The security measures are necessary, but I don’t know whether they’re effective enough to protect children,” said Ashish Doshi, a parent.
