Low conviction rate in Pune exposes system’s weakness: Ashok Dhivare
Citing the importance of forensic department in criminal cases, the ACP said, 'This department too, like the police, should be held responsible if we are unable to crack cases.'
The assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Ashok Dhivare, stressed the need to increase conviction rate.The senior police official was speaking at a symposium on legal aspects of medical practice organised by the Yeshwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) at the Auto Cluster building on Saturday.“Only 9% of the guilty are punished, and this shows our system’s weakness,” he said. Citing the importance of forensic department in criminal cases, the ACP said, “This department too, like the police, should be held responsible if we are unable to crack cases.”Dhivare said the rate of punishing criminals is less than the crimes taking place.“It is necessary to punish offenders to tackle crime at its root. Citizens should question the system if the culprits get away scot-free,” he said.The ACP said the forensic experts and the police should work together to instill people’s confidence in the system.Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor Yogesh Behl said doctors should strive to fulfil their responsibility towards society.The PCMC health officer, Dr Nagkumar Kunachagi; medical director, Dr Rajshekhar Iyyer and YCMH medical superintendent, Dr Anand Jagdale were present.
