Amid rising coronavirus COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra and other parts of India, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra on Monday (March 29) tweeted that a potential lockdown in the state will directly affect small businesses, poor and migrant workers. Mahindra said this amid reports that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has hinted of another lockdown in the state to check the spread of the deadly virus.

It is to be noted that Maharashtra is the worst-hit state in India when it comes to COVID-19 cases and the recent surge in coronavirus cases has forced CM Thackeray to impose a night curfew in the state. It is learnt that the chief minister has also directed the government officials to prepare a roadmap aimed at imposing  another lockdown in the state.

For his part, Anand Mahindra on Monday urged CM Thackeray to focus on hospital/ health infrastructure and not impose lockdown as it will badly impact migrant workers and small businesses.

“The problem, @OfficeofUT ji, is that the people a lockdown hurts most are the poor, migrant workers & small businesses. The original lockdowns were essentially to buy time to build up hospital/ health infrastructure. Let’s focus on resurrecting that & on avoiding mortality,” Mahindra tweeted.

It may be recalled that few weeks ago, Mahindra had urged the government to give permission to vaccinate all willing individuals against coronavirus in Maharashtra.

Besides Mahindra, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, NCP spokesman Nawab Malik and Maharashtra BJP president Chandrakant Patil also urged CM Thackeray to not impose lockdown in the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 31,643 COVID-19 cases on Monday which is a relief as the state was recording above 35,000 cases for the last 3-4 days.
