Mumbai University (MU) senate member Dhanaraj Kohachade from Yuva Sena and law faculty Shomit Salunkhe from the varsity, requested the Vice Chancellor (VC) of MU to give open access to university’s Fort campus for foreign tourists. The duo wrote a letter to the VC.
The two gave a letter to the VC on Monday, stating that the most iconic parts situated in MU’s Fort campus, like the Rajabai Tower and the Convocation hall are out of city people and foreign tourist’s reach. According to them, these two symbolic structures are part of city’s architectural history. They were made up in Gothic architecture style during British era.
Shomit Salunkhe, professor of law and also an MPhil student at MU, said, “Rajbhavan campus of the Maharashtra state in the city which is the residence of the governor is open for common public following due registration. Then why is university depriving its citizens and tourists to at least visit limited areas of these monuments!”
Echoing the sentiments of Salunkhe, a senate member Kohachade, said, “Earlier there was easy access to these two places of the university. But now giving the excuse of security threats, the access to these places has been curbed. If given an access to visit these two iconic places, the university can generate revenue out of it.”
While the letter was submitted on Monday, the two have not yet received any response to it from university officials.
When contacted, an University official said, they were not aware of the letter. However, sources from the university said, “Long time ago, there was a suicide attempt from Rajabai Tower. From then, access has been curbed. Also, the monuments are architectural wonders and varsity does not allow anyone except national and international dignitaries.”
