LBS road widening: 800 shops in Ghatkopar & Bhandup to protest

The civic body will soon start widening of LBS road which has been pending for several years.

Around 800 shops and commercial units along the LBS road in Bhandup and Ghatkopar have been excluded from the eligibility to get compensation. They have been served a notice that their structures will be removed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and they can submit their side by October 22.

The civic body will soon start widening of LBS road which has been pending for several years. Now, the widening has become important as Metro will pass over the road and pillars will will be laid in the middle of the road.

Affected shop owners have alleged that the the civic body is following standard process while giving compensation. They claimed that in many projects it opted for year 2000 as cut off date while they are opting 1962 and 1964 for in their case. "So far the BMC had given compensation to affected shops and commercial units taking cut off year 2000," said Ram Prasad, one of the shops in Bhandup.

A delegation of their representatives also met civic chief on Monday and presented their issues. "Around 800 shops will be affected due to the decision," said Ashok Patil, MLA from Bhandup. The civic body has given them October 22 to put up their side, and if they fail, the civic body will remove their shops

Praveen Chheda, former Congress corporator from Ghatkopar said that in the past, year 2000 was taken as datum for all road widening works. "There cannot be different approaches for different roads," said Chheda. He added that Tansa Pipeline, MMRDA projects, Goregaon-Mulund link road among others were taken year 2000 as cut of year. Chheda has given letter to assistant commissioner of N Ward to look into the issue.

Meantime, the civic body has already approved cash compensation for commercial structures. Now, the BMC can remove shops by paying 75% cash compensation of present ready reckoner.

A senior civic official said that year 2000 is cut off for declared slum. "These structures are neither fall under the slum or any project. So, they will get rehabilitation as per year 1962 for shops and 1964 for houses," said the official from Removal of Encroachment.
