A concoction of whipped curd and added sugar — that’s a refreshing lassi for you. Last week, when we asked our readers to recommend their favourite lassi places in the city, we got an overwhelming response. The most promising entry was sent by Pretty Mirchandani, who we met up with outside the Khar (W) Station to sample the lassi that has remained unchanged through her childhood to now. We were just as anxious and excited to try out the lassi, as Mirchandani was.
As we entered Sindhu, barely a two-minute walk from the Khar station, we straight-up ordered a glass of lassi each. Here they only serve the basic thing; no fancy variations of flavoured lassi like mango, kesar and the likes. “During the Mount Mary Fair, my mother used to drive us down from Peddar Road especially for the lassi they serve at Sindhu,” recollects Mirchandani, now a Bandra resident.
Our lassi came in a medium-sized, ordinary looking steel glass, topped with a thick layer of malai and curd, with a spoon in it for help — all for Rs18. Pretty decent we say. “I like the lassi here because it’s thick. Elsewhere, the curd is so diluted that you just gulp it down in a go or sip your lassi with a straw,” says Mirchandani, as she relishes her lassi for the nth time at this 38-year-old Sindhi food joint.
The very first Sindhu was set up by a Sindhi family in Pakistan in 1902, and was set up in Mumbai by the founding family on migrating here. Initially located at Marine Lines in the Old Church lane, the eatery eventually moved to Khar.
Besides lassi, the place is a big hit with the Sindhis in the Bandra-Khar belt for its authentic dry fruit laden, pure ghee halwas and mithais. The sev barfi is a Sindhi specialty here, priced at Rs360 per kg. The moong dal halwa, not very sweet but extremely rich in ghee and dry fruits — clearly not meant for the diet conscious — is also quite famous. “They also make yummy Sindhi curry only on Sundays,” says Mirchandani, who remembers walking into Sindhu with a bunch of female friends on a summer afternoon. “The ice-crushed lassi we had here on that scorching summer afternoon is certainly one of my best lassi memories,” she says, as we walk out high on lassi, not literally of course.
