After the opposition in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) slammed ruling Shiv Sena for rejecting proposals to acquire six plots reserved for schools, playground and roads in the Development Plan 2034, the Sena claimed that the move was to save taxpayers' money as the plots were encroached upon. However, the Improvement Committee had passed proposals to acquire four plots that were encroached.

As per the ready reckoner rate, an estimated cost of these all six plots will be around Rs 1000 crore. Since there is 100 per cent encroachment on the plot, the civic body will have to pay only 25 per cent — Rs 250 crore for all six plots. The remaining 75 per cent of the money can be used to remove encroachment and rehabilitation of people living there.

However, Sena claimed that going by past experiences, encroached plots acquired could not be used in the past. Yashwant Jadhav, senior Sena leader and standing committee chairman said that they have just asked the administration to bring a proposal with a deadline on how and when the amenities will be developed on the land being acquired.

Ravi Raja, a Congress corporator and leader of Opposition in the BMC, slammed the Shiv Sena for rejecting proposals on grounds of encroachment. "Sena is selectively accepting and rejecting the proposal. On the same day, four land acquisition proposal was cleared where there is encroachment," said Raja.

Meanwhile, Jadhav said that he will write to the administration to make a change in the act and make provision of the deadline to develop the amenities on the acquired plot. "Now, an onward proposal will not be cleared if there is no deadline," added Jadhav.
