The Bombay high court on Tuesday directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to carry out site inspection of places within 10 kilometer radius of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and ensure that steps are taken to clear debris and illegal slaughtering of animals to avoid flocking of birds in the area and reduce instances of bird hitting planes.
A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Girish Kulkarni directed that an officer not below the rank of deputy commissioner of police to file an affidavit detailing the further steps taken to prevent piling up of garbage and in turn preventing bird hits.
The direction was given during the hearing of a PIL, filed by lawyer Datta Mane which stated that it is the inaction of the BMC which led him to file the PIL. He insisted that there is immense concern from all airline passengers and those living in the vicinity of the airport. The main issue is pertaining to the menace of bird hits threatening air traffic and lack of action from the BMC against slaughter houses and garbage near the airport.
The petition states that slaughter houses, meat shops and dumping grounds cannot be allowed within a 10 km radius of the airport premises.
The court took cognizance of the reply filed by the petitioner Datta Mane who attached photographs of places visited around the airport where a large amount of filth had accumulated. It said, "This is a serious issue and the corporation will have to do something." The court has adjourned the hearing till October 10.
