Kavita Karkare, wife of slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare, passes away

Kavita Karkare, wife of the slain chief of Maharashtra Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) Hemant Karkare, passed away on Monday.

Kavita (57) breathed her last in Hinduja Hospital in Mahim. She was brought to the Hinduja on Saturday after she suffered brain haemorrhage and later slipped into coma with severe brain damage. She was kept in a ventilator but not responding to treatment. However, she was declared dead on Monday.

Earlier, Dr PP Ashok, Consultant and Head of Neurology at Hinduja hospital, had said, “She was admitted in an unconscious state. We tried to revive her heart and stabilise her. A brain scan revealed that there she had brain haemorrhage. Her brain is badly damaged and there is no blood supply to her brain.”

After the death of her martyred husband Hemant Karkare, who died while fighting terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Kavita had refused to receive the reward amount of Rs 1 crore announced by the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Kavita's children had also consented for her organs to be donated after the hospital declared Kavita brain dead on Sunday evening.

According to the hospital, the decision had given new lease of life to two end stage kidney patients and one end stage liver patient. Kavita's children also decided to donate their mother's eyes and skin.
