Their assumption was based on the fact that the family had managed to purchase a flat worth Rs85 lakh without securing any bank loan.

Police officials who were part of the team that cracked the case have revealed that the family’s transaction had somehow become common knowledge and was discussed in the locality.

Sameer Khan and Sandeep Warsue, two of the accused, thought of kidnapping Karnit for ransom immediately after they learnt about the matter. “They thought the family must be rich as it could buy the property without taking any bank loan. Hence, the accused decided to target the Shah family,” said an officer.

Sources added that the Shah family had managed to raise the money for the flat by saving up and by selling one of its other properties.

The investigation has further revealed that the accused foolishly gave the address of the cake shop owned by Sohanlal Gupta, one of the accused, while procuring a SIM card. “This made our job easy. We learnt about the plan and where the boy was kept by questioning Gupta and his worker,” said a police officer.

Another interesting fact that has come to light is that when the Shah family did not receive any ransom call for over eight days, top police officials decided to reduce the police cover near the Shah household to give the accused the impression that the police had lost interest in the case.
