A two-year-old Versova boy died on Monday after he fell from the bike on which he was taken for a joyride by the household help. The mishap took place on the flyover opposite Celebration club near Lokhandwala in Andheri on Saturday, when the help, Gopal Khandare, took two-year-old Jayan Khatri for a ride after his parents left for some work at night. The toddler plummeted headlong onto the road and succumbed to his injuries two days later.

According to the Oshiwara police, Khandare, 24, works for Versova-based Abdul Khatri, 36, who trades in garments."The boy was asking to go on a bike ride. When they were riding down the flyover at speed, Jayan fell down," said a police officer.

He added that Khandare had been working for the Khatris for four years and is like a family member to them. The parents were therefore reluctant to file a first information report.

Senior inspector Subhash Khanvilkar of Oshiwara police station said, "We have registered a case under sections 304A (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused was granted bail. We have recorded statements of the parents and witnesses."
