Starting today until October 2, the Make a Wish Foundation is going beyond monetary donations and is asking you to give your time to those in need. The Foundation works across India, fulfilling requests of children who are terminally ill — often, they are patients of cancer, HIV, thalassaemia, etc. The Foundation works vigorously to give these children a few moments of joy and fulfillment, moments the rest of us take for granted. “This activity costs next to nothing to us in terms of time or money, as it takes up to only three hours of your week at the most. But it can make a life-changing difference in a child’s quality of life,” says Venkat Krishnan, a Joy of Giving volunteer.
The children’s requests usually include childhood staples such as bicycles, video games, music players, or simply, just a set of new clothes. Through the iVolunteer organisation, you can contact a child in need in your city — whether you are in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad or Bangalore. “Once you contact us, we will put you in touch with a child who needs your assistance in your city,” says Neha, the coordinator for iVolunteer. “You can be a part of fulfilling the ultimate wish of a small child who is going through immeasurable hardships. You can choose whether you would like to be present during the fulfillment of the wish, or we can send you a photo or a video of the wish.” Participating along with volunteers are corporate organisations such as United Health Insurance in Pune.
Another mode of fulfilling the wish would be to draw a cheque in favour of ‘Make-A-Wish Foundation of India’ for the amount of the wish chosen to be adopted. Subject to the realisation of the cheque, the receipt, the 80G certificate, a thank you note and a photograph of the child whose wish will be fulfilled, will be sent to you. Let Make a Wish foundation know if you also want to be present for the wish fulfillment so that they can inform you about the date and timing of the same.
