Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jayant Patil was appointed the party's group leader in the Maharashtra Assembly, it was officially announced on Monday.

The announcement about his elevation was made by state NCP president Sunil Tatkare.

Patil, a former Maharashtra minister, succeeds R R Patil, who passed away on February 16 after battling oral cancer.

Like R R Patil, Jayant Patil also belongs to Sangli district in western Maharashtra.

NCP has 40 MLAs in the 288-member House, compared to 42 MLAs of the Congress.
