After a meeting between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) state chief Sudhir Mungantiwar in Mumbai on Tuesday, speculations are rife that the BJP will support the MNS.

Mungantiwar is said to have met Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray after holding discussions with the MNS chief. Although none of the parties have given a clear indication about what happened at the meetings, it is understood that the BJP is likely to support the MNS in the mayoral polls.

If the BJP goes with the MNS, the Shiv Sena may withdraw its mayoral candidate and abstain from voting, thus returning the ‘Thane favour’.

On the other hand, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is trying very hard to keep the MNS at bay. While the NCP is relying on the Congress and the independents for support, it could still be a tough game with talks of electing an independent candidate for the post of mayor doing the rounds. “In such a situation, the Congress might choose to support on the basis of who the independent candidate is,” said a senior Congress leader.

Talks of Shiv Sena supporting the NCP and the Congress are also doing the rounds.
