Big English medium and international school chains are now lining up to get affiliation from the Maharanternational Education Board (MIEB) of state government to start vernacular schools. A prominent school, Vibgyor High too is laying foundation for Marathi medium school.

The state earlier had decided to extend the programme only to government and government-aided schools. But they have now opened doors for self-financed schools. In the new academic year, the state has decided to give MIEB affiliation to 50 government schools, 25 government aided and 25 self-finance schools for coming academic year. The state also announced that all government schools affiliated to MIEB board will be called as Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee International School.

Vibgyor High, an English medium school chain with boards like CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE is soon to start Marathi medium school in Kolhapur in affiliation with MIEB. Rustom Kerawalla, founder chairman, of the school, said, "Yes we have applied for MIEB affiliation and we want to start Marathi medium in Kolhapur. This is first time that we will be starting Marathi medium school. The school will start in coming academic session and we are awaiting the affiliation."

As soon as the affiliation is given, the teachers will be provided training on curriculum by the MIEB board, informed Kavita Sahay, vice chairperson of the school.

Francis Joseph, head of development and strategy, Maharashtra International Education Board said, "We have received 455 applications for the new academic year. The reputed international English medium schools like Vibgyor High and DS High school, that runs Marathi medium school in Sion have applied for affiliation. Apart from that, Gujarati medium school like Ramji Assar Vidyalaya in Ghatkopar have also sent an application. Holy Cross High School, a Marathi medium school in Kurla west whose number of students had dropped have also applied for affiliation. MIEB is getting very good response. Instead of going for other boards or shutting down regional language schools because of dropout rate the schools are now considering to go for the international board started by their own state. Our focus is to build a leadership module and training teachers."
