Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said the future belongs to those who innovate and exhorted that India and Israel — both innovation nations — must come together to define the future.
"We in Israel are seizing the future, you in India are seizing the future. Together, we will get there a lot quicker and further,'' he said, in his 20-minute speech at the India-Israel Business Summit in Mumbai, on the last leg of his six-day visit to India.
Stressing the role of governments, Netanyahu noted that innovation does not happen by itself, "The job of governments like that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's and my own is to facilitate competitive advantages and the ability to innovate." Illustrating changes in his own government, Netanyahu pointed out how the removal of excessive regulations, getting rid of the bureaucratic jungle and lowering taxes led to instant competitiveness and growth. "This is what has made Israel a business-friendly economy," he stated.
Speaking of PM Modi's reforms, Netanyahu added, "India knows the value of competition and its glory. Modi just simplified taxes and he is doing away with regulations. He understands what is innovation." However the Israeli PM left his Indian counterpart with some food for thought, "PM Modi needs to simplify bureaucracy and create a conducive environment for businesses."
Using the nation's favourite sport as an analogy to stress the importance of competition, Netanyahu said, "How many of you know who won the 1983 Cricket World Cup? If you were not in London then you must have been on the streets honking when India defeated West Indies. That is competition."
Netanyahu believes the Indo-Israel partnership is reaching unprecedented heights and is the beginning of "a wonderful friendship" of which the possibilities are boundless.
NETANYAHU'S NOTE TO MODI
India knows the value of competition and its glory. Modi just simplified taxes, he is doing away with regulations but needs to simplify bureaucracy to create a conducive environment for businesses.
