A class 7 student of Nutan Vidya Mandir in Mankhurd injured his left ring finger after he was allegedly made to lift a see-saw on the playground  of his school on Monday.

“The school authorities called us around 10.30am, saying he had injured his hand, so we immediately rushed to the school. My wife then took him to the doctor. When we asked our son as to how he had hurt himself, he told us that a woman who works as a non-teaching staff had told him to pick up a see-saw on the school’s playground,” said the boy’s father.

The boy has suffered a fracture on his left ring finger and has also damaged a blood vessel.

“One blood vessel is damaged. There is also the possibility of the boy contracting gangrene, which will also be determined only after 48 hours,” said Dr Arvind Kalekar, who has been administering him medical treatment.

The school said it was looking into the matter. “When the boy came to us, we were told that he injured himself while playing during the break. We provided him with first aid and called up his mother, who then took him to the doctor. It was only when the police came to the school later in the evening that we were told about the incident,” said principal of the school, Harishchandra Sarang.

“We have enquired with all our non-teaching employees if any of them had instructed the student to do any work, but they have all  answered in the negative. We will also call the other students who were with the boy during the incident to confirm what exactly could have happened,” said the principal.

Meanwhile, the parents  of the teenage boy have sent a written complaint to the state education department besides having approached the police. “We have received a complaint from the parents, but we will register the case only after recording statements. We have asked the parties concerned to come to the police station on Wednesday morning,” said an official from Trombay police station.
