Indian travel agents have joined their counterparts from around the world against American Airlines (AA) move to impose additional surcharge on them if they book tickets through Travelport owned Galileo and Worldspan global distribution system (GDS).
The airline is engaged in a battle with Travelport as it thinks that the latter is overcharging them. Agents fear that if this happens, they will have to pass on the additional cost to passengers.
The airline has announced that from February 2011, the agents using Galileo and Worldspan GDS across the globe except America will have to pay a surcharge in the range of US $ 2 to US $ 22 per flight on various routes.
This has united all the travel agents who have come together to fight the airline. “Our world body United Federation of Travel Agents (UFTA) based in Geneva has taken up the issue with the airline and we offer them our full support,” says Rajji Rai, president, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI).
“We are protesting against their monopolistic practice to force us to use a particular GDS,” says he. The airline has locked horns with Travelport which is used by most travel agents across the world for inter-airline seat bookings.
The airline finds Travelport too expensive compared to other GDS systems in international markets.
It has, however, exempted other GDS like Amadeus, Abacus, Axess, Kotis, Travelsky, Infini and Sabre GDSs that may be available in your market, together with the American Airlines Direct Connect.
The agents fear that if they are forced by the airline to use this system they will have to pass on the cost to the passengers. “If we follow the airlines dictate then we have no option but to pass on the cost to passengers who will suffer in the end,” says Rai.
He has also warned of stern action against the airline if they force them to follow this system. “Right now UFTA is trying to have a meeting between AA and Travelport. If need be we will approach Competition Commission of India (CCI),” he said.
