Soon, procuring details about the crime cases of undertrials and convicts in the state’s jails will be just a mouse click away, as the state prisons department has decided to digitise records of all 43 prisons.

Personal details of the about 25,000 odd prisoners lodged in the prisons, including information such as conduct in jail, past criminal cases, current status and details of court proceedings will soon be fed into computers. It will also include family details and addresses of the prisoners.

Additional director general of police and inspector general of state prisons, Meeran Chadha Borwankar, confirmed the development.

Deputy inspector general (western region) of state prisons, Rajendra Dhamne, said, “This will also make managing of jail administration simpler and more effective. The project has started in all the jails in the state and it will be put to use in the next couple of months.”
