Mane, whose death race took away eight lives and left 39 people injured, dodged at least 125 policemen on Wednesday morning.

Mane stole a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus parked at the Swargate depot on Wednesday and raced it on various busy roads in Swargate, Camp, Bhavani Peth, Dias Plot, Mukund Nagar, Mitra Mandal, Sarasbaug and Parvati Payatha.

The entire route of his death race falls under the jurisdictions of three police stations and two of them are located on the track itself. Besides, there are four police chowkeys and at least four manned signal chowks.

Also, policemen are stationed inside Swargate ST stand and the prepaid rickshaw booth at its gate.

Mane’s first encounter with the policemen was at Swargate ST stand, but they could not stop him from driving away. Then, their attempt to halt him at the prepaid rickshaw booth also came a cropper. In Jedhe Chowk at Swargate, Mane almost mowed down a policeman who was handling the traffic situation at the busy junction. The Swargate police station is located at Jedhe Chowk. There were 55 policemen at the police station. Later, as he returned to the depot, he crossed a policeman at the gate of the prepaid rickshaw booth. Then, near Dhobi ghat on Shankarsheth road, Mane encountered two beat marshals astride a motorbike. They opened fire at the bus, but he refused to stop.

There were traffic policemen at Golibar Maidan chowk too. He then crossed the Solapur Bazar police chowkey where five policemen were present. Later, he crossed the Cantonment police station with 30 policemen. Moments later, he crossed the Pulgate police chowkey where five cops were on duty. Then, he entered the narrow lanes of Bhavani Peth and emerged at the chowk opposite the Ramoshi Gate police chowkey where five policemen were posted.

The 40-minute incident, which looked like a sequence from a Bollywood potboiler, ended only when the police succeeded in intercepting the bus with the help of residents near Neelayam theatre in Parvati-Payatha.
