The state government wants to ensure that examinations of final year undergraduate courses are not hampered due to the college teachers’ boycott.
On Wednesday, the state government passed a resolution asking college authorities to do ‘everything’ they can to conduct exams on time.

The resolution states that college authorities should not hesitate to call in the police for protection if striking teachers throw a spanner in the works by not allowing supervisors in examination halls or by preventing retired teachers from assessing papers. It also states that principals should register an offence with the police.

If matters do reach such a stage, it would be the first time that policemen are roped in to keep striking teachers from impeding examination work.

Over five lakh students are scheduled to take final year exams across eight varsities of the state. Theory exams for final year bachelor of commerce exam are slated to begin on March 28. The government’s resolution has been sent out to heads of all universities and colleges in the state.

Already, practical exams of nearly 17,000 third year bachelor of science students have been hit.

The Association of Non-Government Colleges has decided to seek police help to conduct examinations smoothly. Principal of Hinduja College at Charni Road TA Shivare, who is also president of the association, said it is for the first time in his 42-year-long career that he has come across a resolution pinning exam responsibility on colleges heads. “Considering past instances of teachers’ organisations not allowing examiners to enter colleges, we might be forced to take police help,” said Shivare. Principal of Kirti College, VN Magre, too said they have no choice but to conduct exams as per schedule.

Mumbai university V-C Rajan Welukar said the orders would have to be followed.
