Flouting norms blatantly, sand is being mined and transported illegally from the Ramnadi bed from a spot behind Ramnagar Colony in Bavdhan. The administration is yet to take steps to stop the activity, going on for past two weeks.
A pit is seen in the river at the spot in Ramnadi from where sand is being carried. Mined sand can also be seen near Sai Kamal Society on the bank of the river that flows through Bavdhan and Baner.
The sand is being dumped in small trolleys and carried to the truck standing nearby on the banks. Sai Kamal Society is located on one bank at the place from where sand is being mined, while there is an open plot on the other side. Mined sand can be seen on the other side. Nearly 20-30 trucks of sand have been carried since last week of November.
According to Bavdhan residents, the illegal sand mining is happening since last two weeks. The residents have complained that even after two weeks, no officer from the district collectorate had visited the spot to stop the illegal activity.
They said the sand is being taken by some contractor. The pits created due to extraction of sand are disturbing the water flow and breeding mosquitoes, they said.
Last year’s flash floods had led to massive damage of property in Ramnagar Colony and other housing societies in that area.
Special efforts had been undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation to demarcate floodline and construct security wall along Ramnadi after the destruction caused by flash floods. The river bed too had been widened.
However, the flow of the river has increased after widening of river bank as more sewage water is being released in the river, the residents felt. The foul smell is adding to their woes. The sewage is bringing silt which remains in the river bed.
Sub-divisional officer Sanjay Patil said, “We will have to check what is happening. I will look into the matter and see what can be done.”
