Singh felt that the police, to reinvent themselves, need to re-prioritise their goals.
“Today, every policeman is only thinking of ways to make more money through bribes. This should change,” he said.
The need of the hour is to implement reforms that are already passed. Pointing out an example, DS Soman, former Mumbai police commissioner said that after the 2006 local train serial blasts, the government had promised to form an NSG commando unit in Mumbai. “However, nothing came out of it. Two years later, after the recent terror attacks, the government has woken up again. It should be concerned about the safety of an average Mumbaikar,” said Soman.
Also, the wastage of manpower in providing security to VVIPs should be discontinued. “It is a colossal waste of energy and money,” he added.
Another former Mumbai police commissioner Roni Mendonca felt that every policeman should be treated with respect and this will help boost their morale. “Ego issues should not affect professional functioning. Senior officers should instill a sense of discipline among their subordinates for effective functioning,” said Mendonca. The crime branch and the special branch, which were once considered ‘eyes and ears’ of the force should get their act together, he said.
