Husband, in-laws held for Pune woman’s death

A 25-year-old married woman, who suffered serious burn injuries last week, died at a hospital on Friday.

The woman, Chaitrali Balasaheb Gavhane (25) of Bibvewadi, allegedly set herself ablaze at her residence in Indiranagar at 8.30 pm on December 22. She was undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital.
The victim’s mother, Sunita Rajaram Pilware (47) of Indiranagar, Bibvewadi, lodged a complaint against her daughter’s in-laws at Sahakarnagar police station, alleging a case of dowry death. The police have booked her husband, Balasaheb Vitthal Gavhane, brother-in-law Santosh alias Kaluram Gavhane and sister-in-law Vaishali Santosh Gavhane for abetment of suicide. The couple has a four-year-old son.

Police officer examined in Choudhari case
Purushottam Borate, the suspect in the gang rape-cum-murder case of BPO employee, Jyotikumari Choudhari, had volunteered to give a statement to the police and showed the spot from where the victim’s dupatta was recovered, the police told the court on Friday.
Police inspector Rajendra Patil, investigating officer in the case, told the court of additional sessions judge, Usha Thakare, that Borate also showed the spot where he had thrown the purse of the victim into the Pavana river. But the police were not able to locate it. Patil is the last witness in the case to be examined. He was being examined by special public prosecutor, Ujwal Nikam.
The court deferred cross-examination by the defence counsel, Mahendra Kawchale, as he requested the court that he would conduct the cross-examination in the presence of the accused. The court has fixed January 3 as the next date of hearing.

Man held for murder
The Bhosari police arrested a man for allegedly murdering Ramashankar Chetram Tiwari (26) of Uttar Pradesh with sharp weapons between December 22 and 24 in Pimpri. The complaint was filed by Mahendra Shrikrushna Tripathi (34) of Shrikrushnanagar, Nagpur at Bhosari police station. The suspect, identified as Anil Dada Sawant of Nashik Phata, was arrested on Saturday.

According to the police, the complainant owns a scrap materials shop in Nagpur and Tiwari worked as a commission agent at his shop for one year. He used to send his scrap material to Rajkumar Gupta’s shop in Indore. On December 5, Tiwari came to Pune for his work and stayed at Indralok hotel in Pimpri.
Police inspector, RP Choudhari of Bhosari police station, said, “On December 20, Tiwari went to Shaniwar Peth to get Rs10 lakh from a dealer. On December 21, Gupta tried to call up Tiwari, but failed to get through. So he came to Indralok hotel and found that Tiwari had left the hotel on December 20.

“Tiwari’s body found on the Pavana river bank on December 24. Sawant was Tiwari’s friend and could have committed the murder for money,” the police added.
