Housewife stabbed to death in Dhankavdi

A 36-year-old housewife was brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight inside her third-floor apartment at Navrang Apartments in Rajmudra Society, Dhankavdi, around 9.15 am on Thursday. The victim, Bindu Krushnakumar Nayar, is survived by her husband and a 14-year-old son, who studies in standard VIII.

Though the motive behind the gruesome murder could not be ascertained, the Sahakarnagar police have detained one Sujit Nambiar, 28, a friend of the victim’s husband, for questioning.

According to the police, the suspect might have been inside the house after killing the woman and escaped while she was being rushed to hospital by her neighbours. The victim’s husband and son had left home early in the morning. Nayar runs a tyre shop in Shukrawar Peth.

Deputy commissioner of police Rajesh Kumar Mor (Zone II) said that Bindu was alone in the house when someone knocked on the door. As she opened it, the suspect attacked her with a sharp weapon, stabbing her in the stomach, back and right hand.

The victim’s neighbour, Nanda Mahadik, heard the woman’s screams and rushed to her rescue. When she went inside, she saw Bindu lying in a pool of blood. The residents took her to Bharati Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

“The suspect came to the flat after ensuring that Bindu’s husband and son were not at home. The motive was not to commit burglary as no items were found missing,” the police said.

Senior police inspector Bajerao Bhosale said that the suspect seems to know the Nayars well. “The door was locked from inside. When Nanda knocked on the door, a badly injured Bindu opened it and collapsed. We have a strong suspicion that the suspect was hiding in the house after committing the crime and escaped while neighbours were rushing the victim to the hospital,” he said.

The police found an abandoned motorcycle parked 100 feet from the society. The victim’s husband said the vehicle belonged to his friend, Nambiar, who was picked up for questioning.
